Biography
Phyu P Aung is a Professor in the Department of Pathology (Section of Dermatopathology) at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UT-MDACC). Dr. Aung earned her Medical Degree from the Institute of Medicine of Rangoon (Burma). She received her Ph.D. in Molecular Pathology from Hiroshima University School of Medicine in Japan. Subsequently, she completed a research fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, OH. Dr. Aung then completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology at the National Cancer Institute/NIH, MD under the supervision of Dr. Elaine Jaffe, where she served as Chief Resident, and after this, she completed her fellowship in Dermatopathology at Boston Medical Center, under the supervision of Dr. Jag Bhawan. Following her training, Dr. Aung joined the faculty at UT-MDACC in 2014. Her work in Cancer biology and cutaneous lesions has resulted in more than 200 original publications in peer reviewed journals, 12 book chapters and over 200 poster/platform presentations at national (USA) and international conferences as well as eight intra- and extra-mural Grants. Dr. Aung is an active member/ the Executive Committee of multiple Pathology and Dermatopathology Societies, grant reviewers of 3 national and international societies including NIH, and an invited speaker/organizer/moderator in more than 75 national and international universities as well as conferences. Special interests include melanocytic neoplasms, Merkel cell carcinoma and molecular advancement of diagnostic Dermatopathology. Dr. Aung is also the Director of the Oncologic Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program with 14 fellows at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is a very passionate teacher and has mentored multiple national and international residents, fellows and practicing physicians.
