Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Dermatopathology is a diagnostically complex and nuanced subspecialty that can pose significant learning challenges for pathology residents. Training often relies on variable case exposure, which is difficult to standardize. Early access to structured educational resources may help learners address foundational knowledge gaps and build diagnostic confidence. METHODS: We developed an introductory, interactive dermatopathology module using Articulate Rise 360 covering normal histology, descriptive terminology, and key neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities. Content included interactive lessons and annotated photomicrographs sourced from our institutional archives and various digital resources. Effectiveness was assessed with anonymized pre- and post-module tests, followed by a feedback survey. Learners reported their dermatopathology exposure (tracked as completed dermatopathology rotations) and were classified as either junior (<2 rotations) or senior (≥2 rotations). Two equivalent test versions (“A” and “B”) were administered in alternating order between participants to control for retest and difficulty bias. RESULTS: Ten participants were included in the study. Mean test scores improved significantly after module completion (46.6% vs 76.2%; paired t-test, p<0.001), with significant gains identified amongst both junior (n=6, p=0.005) and senior (n=4, p=0.048) learners. Mean completion time was 180 minutes. Participants valued the interactive elements and annotated images, and most participants reported plans to use the module as both a reference and an introduction/refresher during future rotations. CONCLUSION: The utilization of an introductory, interactive module can serve as a useful adjunct to resident education, both significantly improving short-term knowledge gains in learners of all experience levels and providing an effective way to standardize dermatopathology exposure.
