Abstract:

Medical students frequently have limited exposure to dermatopathology, and finding time to create educational materials like practice questions can be challenging for instructors. This project was undertaken to determine if artificial intelligence (AI) could be a fast and reliable tool for creating dermatology board exam-style questions.

Ninety multiple-choice questions were created, and the time taken to manually create them was tracked. ChatGPT and Gemini were then used to create similar questions, and the time required for them was recorded. AI-generated questions were fact-checked against peer-reviewed sources such as VisualDX, Up-to-Date, and Pathology Outlines. The average time for manual question creation was 265.2 seconds, while ChatGPT took 44.57 seconds and Gemini took 45.18 seconds. Even after corrections, both AI platforms were significantly faster than manual creation. There was no statistically significant difference in time elapsed or accuracy between ChatGPT and Gemini.

AI can expedite the creation of high-quality educational materials. While the AI applications did make some errors, editing the information still saved time. Due to imperfections, AI should be used as a tool for educators rather than a replacement for teachers.
