Abstract:

Background: Increased utilization of virtual teaching modalities and testing methods utilizing scanned slides has led to greater demand for virtual dermatopathology resources. Objective: To identify and categorize readily accessible websites offering dermatopathology resources. Methods: A series of web-based searches were performed with Google Search engine using the following terms in various combinations (for a total of 8 separate searches): dermatopathology, skin pathology, online learning resources, educational resources, digital learning, and digital slides. The first 100 hits of each search were assessed for inclusion criteria of offering any form of free, digital dermatopathology educational material. Included websites were then reviewed for type of digital content, relevant learner level, and case volume. Results: Twenty-one websites met inclusion criteria. Nine websites (43%) offered virtual slides, 14 (67%) offered photomicrographs, 3 (14%) offered video lectures, and 5 (24%) offered assessments. Fourteen websites (67%) were best suited for beginner/intermediate level (medical students, junior residents), 4 websites (19%) were best suited for more advanced levels, and 3 websites (14%) were appropriate for all levels. Two websites (9%) included less than 10 cases, 5 websites (24%) included 10-50 cases, 2 websites (9%) included 50-100 cases, 3 websites (14%) included more than 100 cases, and 9 websites (43%) did not list a number of cases. Conclusion: A variety of websites offering free dermatopathology resources for all levels of learners are available. Limitations included potentially missing relevant websites due to limited search terms, and additional platforms for virtual learning such as podcasts, social media and Youtube channels were not included.
