(478) Cutaneous sparganosis: the case of the migrating nodule

Abstract

Sparganosis is zoonotic disease caused by infection with the larval form of a cestode from the genus Spirometra or Sparganum, which can migrate through the body infecting numerous organs and tissues. Human infections in North America are rare but more common in East and Southeast Asia and can be caused by contact with the organism through unclean drinking water, contaminated food sources, or traditional Chinese medicine techniques. We report a rare North American case of subcutaneous sparganosis occurring in a 36-year-old female with no travel history to Asia. Given the unusual clinical presentation and rarity of this condition in North America, this is an important entity for dermatologists, infectious disease specialists, and pathologists to recognize.
