(350) The Weekly D.E.R.M.: A Novel Modality for Supplementary Dermatopathology Education

Abstract

Knowledge of dermatopathology (DP) is critical to understanding cutaneous disease. As such, education in DP is an integral part of dermatology and pathology residencies. Studies estimate that dermatology residents spend up to 30% of educational time in DP-specific activities. Conversely, pathology trainees spend relatively less time on DP-specific education over their training. Regardless of program type, there is a need for novel supplementary education within the DP pedagogical landscape. The Weekly D.E.R.M (Dermatologic Entity Review Mailing) was developed as a peer-to-peer review of common dermatologic entities emailed once per week to interested pathology residents/fellows. Utilizing an in-house case each week, a single-page PDF flyer including histopathology images, histologic findings, clinical presentations, differential diagnoses, and final diagnosis wording is presented in a succinct, bullet-point form. The Weekly DERM provides unique advantages as a supplement to traditional DP education, such as lectures or sign-out.  The single-page format with a focus on singular entities is easily digestible for novice and experienced learners. Distribution at spaced intervals as an email-PDF allows for easy cataloging and review at later dates. Entities with histologic correlates in other areas of pathology can be chosen to reinforce the shared connections with DP e.g. microbiology, bone/soft tissue, hematopathology etc. Importantly, as a peer-to-peer educational endeavor, the trainee developing the curriculum evolves in their role as a learner, becoming an educator and increasing their own DP knowledge along with their colleagues’. The Weekly DERM is a novel DP educational modality with distinct advantages and ample room for future growth.
